Holocaust and World War //by Mona
Sue Weissmark (Oxford University
Press; $28):
The interaction at a meeting attend-
ed by sons and daughters of both
Holocaust survivors and Nazi perpetra-
tors is chronicled. The idea was to stop
the hatred between the groups. The
author, whose parents were survivors, is
a psychologist and founder of the
Mansfield Institute for Social Justice at
Roosevelt University.

What We Knew: Terror, Mass Murder,
and Everyday Lift in Nazi Germany,
An Oral History by Eric Johnson and
Karl-Heinz Reuband (Basic Books;
$27.50):
Based on a survey of more than
3,000 people and personal interviews
with 200 Germans alive during the
Third Reich, the authors describe how
non-Jewish. Germans led very normal
existences during the time of the Nazis.
They report that millions of ordinary
German citizens knew about the mass
murders, and they explain that rela-
tions between Jews and non Jews were
good before Hitler came to power.
Johnson is a history professor at
Central Michigan University in Mount
Pleasant, while Reuband is a professor
of sociology at the University of
Dusseldorf.

The Search for Major Plagge: The Nazi
Who Saved Jews by Michael Good
(Fordham University Press; $27.95):
Major Karl Plagge examines his
moral choices and finds ways to save
Lithuanian Jews while supposedly car-
rying out his military duties. He issues
warnings so that threatened Jews can
find hiding places, and he argues that
workers scheduled to be killed actually
are indispensable. One survivor is the
mother of the author, a doctor in
Connecticut.

Nothing Is Too Late: The Hunt for a
Holocaust Swindler by Mark
Kalmansohn (Brassey's Inc.; $27.95):
Victims of Lucian Kozminski, who
has swindled thousands of Holocaust
survivors, tell. their stories. It is believed
that the criminal faked his own death,
and the search for him continues. The
author, an entertainment lawyer and
former U.S. attorney, seeks the help of
the public in tracking him down and
makes appeals through the book and
TV appearances.

Hitler Youth by Michael Kater
(Harvard University Press; $27;95):
Nazi leaders bring young people into
their ranks by involving boys in sports
activities and girls in domestic pursuits.

The New York Times and its coverage
of the fate of European Jews from
1939-1945 are examined. Laurel Leff
explains why she believes the newspa-
per minimized and misunderstood
genocide at the hands of the Nazis and
influenced other newspapers to do the
same. The author was a journalist for
18 years before joining the faculty of
Northeastern University- in Boston. ❑
