and stains, and they are almost
maintenance free."
Kolody says composites have
gained ground in popularity over
traditional woods. "Last year, 54
percent of our jobs were composite
decking."
But what about color? That's no
problem, according to Kolody.
"There are as many options with
composites as there are with
wood."
Trex, a brand installed by
Kolody, comes in six colors with
choice of a wood-grain or smooth
finish. The newest Trex line,
Brasilia, features the exotic look of
tropical hardwoods. All are resistant
to fading, peeling and cracking, and
there are no splinters, which is
important for families with small
children who like to run barefoot.
Most composite decking is made
from recycled plastic and reclaimed

wood or sawdust. The plastic
shields the wood from moisture
and insect damage. The wood pro-
tects the plastic from UV light _
damage and gives a solid, natural
feel that looks great year after year.
As for cost, a deck made of com-
posite materials will run about 20
percent more than a deck made of
pine or Douglas fir, and close to a
deck built with higher-end wood
like cedar, cypress or redwood. "I
can build you a functional, beauti-
ful deck for $10,000-15,000," says
Kolody. Decks with walkouts cost
more due to the stairs. And more
elaborate decks can run to $40,000
or more.
A long-lasting composite deck
can be a great addition to any
home. There are several southeast
Michigan deck builders who
would be happy to give you an
estimate. Ei
