"Unfortunately, I think many
people look at those who cele-
brate the ways of nature as
excluding the Nvays of religion,"
he says. "I look at nature as the
most important thing, and many
parts of Judaism, especially in
Israel, share that belief."
Much of his own appreciation
of that undeniable connection
comes from his many visits to the
Jewish state. An active member of
the Society for the Protection of
Nature in Israel, he has been on
field trips in Israel, Jordan and
Egypt.
Here at home, when he's not
tending to West Bloomfield's
heron rookery or wood duck habi-
tat, you'll find him at his farm in
Brandon Township. Situated on
an 11-acre hilltop, Schechter gets
up before dawn to feed the two
goats and gather the eggs from the
12 chickens that inhabit his barn.
"I have a wildflower meadow in
the front that slopes down to the
dirt road, and in summer, I love
being on my screened porch just
'watching,'" he says. "My house is
such a pleasure after the night-
mare drive on Orchard Lake Road
and all the silly bristling about." -1
