key to a longer life
"I foresee regional shopping centers
remaining on top of the retail business
over these new lifestyle centers (outdoor
arrangements with specialty shops and
restaurants)."
A Visionary
'Al Taubman is really a visionary," said
Detroit attorney Alan E. Schwartz, who
is Taubman's friend of more than 50
years. "He's a genius at being able to see
what something is — then visualizing
what it might become. That's a unique
capability.
'Al also has always been extremely
interested in the Jewish community and
strives to be a contributing member of
our community. He believes in the
organized capacity of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit to
financially support Jewish causes."
Robert Aronson, CEO of the Jewish
Federation, pointed out that Taubman
and Max Fisher were always the first
persons he turned to for donations to
special Federation causes and Israel
emergency campaigns.
'Al Taubman is one of the great Jews
of our community," said Aronson.
"Despite his many business responsibili-
ties around the world, he focuses his
philanthropic efforts on the Detroit area.
He always gives generously to the
Federation to cover our needs; and he
never looks for the limelight. We're
proud that he's a member of our com-
munity." Taubman's annual Federation
contribution is reportedly in the "mil-
lions of dollars."
He shrugs off any praise of his philan-
thropy, saying, "I just do it because I
believe in it. And I especially believe in a
strong Jewish education. That's the
foundation of our Jewish life. We always
need more teachers who have sufficient
training so they can give our youngsters
a good Jewish education."
Taubman and Fisher even convinced
their mutual friend, the late Henry Ford
II of Grosse Pointe Farms, to give to
Jewish causes. "Each year, Henry would
donate six-figure amounts to the Allied
Jewish Campaign," Taubman recalled.
In Detroit, Taubman Centers devel-
oped the $50 million Riverfront
Apartments with Fisher, and recently
handled initial leasing for Riverfront
shops at Renaissance Center as General
Motors renovated the complex.
Taubman is a partner in the Athena
Group, an international developer and
manager of non-retail real estate. He also
helped launch Leona Group, an East
Lansing-based operator of charter
schools.
Taubman is the principal benefactor
of the University of Michigan's College
of Architecture and Urban Planning, U-
M's Health Care Center and Medical
Library and Lawrence Technological
University's new Taubman Student
Services Center. He funded the
Taubman Center for State and Local
Government at Harvard University in
Cambridge, Mass.
Taubman serves on numerous indus-
try, civic and religious boards and execu-
tive committees, including the Detroit
Arts Commission and the board of the
College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
He's chairman emeritus of the Archives
of American Art at the Smithsonian
Institution and former chairman of the
National Realty Committee, predecessor
of the recently formed Real Estate
Roundtable.
A number of Taubman's friends and
business associates are scheduled to
come in for the May 10 event, including
Les Wexner, chairman and CEO of
Limitedbrands, a nationwide, 4,000-
store chain of women's apparel shops,
many of them in Taubman's malls.
"I've known Al for 35 years, and I'm
proud of our personal and business rela-
tionship," said Wexner from his
Columbus, Ohio,office. "The thing I
admire most about him is that he really
cares about the welfare of the Detroit
Jewish community — and Jews all over
the world. 'Al and Max Fisher were like
birds of a feather; they made a perfect
tandem of Jewish philanthropists." Li
