to mark Yom HaShoah.

Recalling the annual pilgrim-
age thousands of Vietnam vet-
erans make during Memorial Day
weekend to honor their fallen and
unaccounted-for brothers, the Jewish
Motorcyclists Alliance, a loosely knit
association of the most active Jewish
motorcycle clubs in the country and
Canada, will hold its first-ever "Ride
to Remember" over the week leading
up to the Friday, May 6, Holocaust
Remembrance Day, 60 years after the
end of the Holocaust and World War
II.
And seven members of the Metro
Detroit-based "Chai Riders" are plan-
ning to make the trip, said Sy Freilich,
of White Lake.
"It's a big commitment," said

HMC Hosts Yom HaShoah Observance
The U.S. Air Force from Selfridge Air National Guard Base in
Macomb County will present an honor guard to open the
annual Holocaust Memorial Academy at the Holocaust
Memorial Center's campus, 28123 Orchard Lake Road,
Farmington Hills, at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 8.
The public event will commemorate observance of Yom
Rosenzveig
HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrace Day. A highlight will be the
lighting of candles by Holocaust survivors and their families in honor of the 6
million who perished in the Holocaust and in memory of Israel's victims of ter-
rorism.
The Holocaust Memorial Center (HMC) and Sh a arit Haplaytah will cosponsor
the event. Participating organizations include Children of Holocaust Survivors
Association in Michigan (CHAIM), the Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of
the Holocaust and the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes-Region.
Saul Waldman, HMC's development chair; Alan Zekelman, HMC's immedi-
ate past president; and Dr. Michael Trebelin, HMC president, will chair the .

The Riders were scheduled to meet
at the Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills at 8:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, May 4, where executive
director and founder Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig was to see them off.
"Everyone is publishing their route
on the Web site so groups can meet
along the way," Freilich said.

Cantor Yevsey Gutman of Adat Shalom Synagogue will chant memorial
prayers with piano accompaniment by Cantor Sholom Kalib. Shari Kaufman
Ferber and Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit faculty member Mitch
Master will offer readings.
JAMD students will present musical selections. The Zamir Chorale will per-
form under Ben Cohen's direction.
Greetings will be extended by Dr. Steven D. Grant, past-president of HMC;
Erna Gorman, representing the Hidden Children; and Dr. Charles Silow, presi-
dent of CHAIM. Col. Stephen Vancil, a senior officer from Selfridge, will
speak on behalf of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzveig, founder and executive vice president of the
HMC, will deliver the memorial address.
Guests will then move to the Eternal Flame, where they will light yahrtzeit
candles and be led in the chanting of Kaddish and El Molei Rachamim.

two-day trip to Virginia for a dinner
gathering with other riders in Falls
Church.
Chai Rider Dennis Chatlin, of
Farmington Hills said the group is
hoping to link up with a few hundred
other riders.
"The following morning [May 6],
we're all gathering at a Harley
Davidson dealership 25 miles outside
Washington," he said. "From there
we'll go to the Holocaust Museum."
Mike Feldman, 61, of West
Bloomfield is going for several reasons.
He's a child of a Holocaust survivor
and very much involved in Holocaust
remembrance activities, he said.
"Beyond that, I'm an avid motorcy-
cle rider, and I've been with the Chai
Riders for years," he said.
"This is the longest ride I've ever
taken, and I've always dreamt of cross-
ing state lines," he said. "I not only get
a chance to do it, but do it with lands-
men. It's an exciting time and I'll be
with all my chaverim (friends), so I'm
really looking forward to it." ❑
