He served on the board of directors of the Alzheimer's Association of Michigan. Born in New York City, Dr. Gorell graduated from New York University with a bachelor's degree in German. He attended the State University of New York (now Upstate Medical University) in Syracuse, graduating in 1966. After serving his internship and residency at hospitals in St. Louis, he served as a chaplain with the Air Force Medical Corps, assigned to an Army unit in Vietnam from 1968-69. Following a year at Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania, he returned to St. Louis to be an assistant resident physician in neurology. He was the son of the late Harry Gorell and son-in-law of the late Maureen Mendelsohn. Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery.
