Carl's Chop House is a seven-day-a-
week operation ... Monday-Thursday,
11:30-11:30; Friday and Saturday,
11:30 a.m.-midnight; Sunday brunch,
10:30-2:30, then regular menu until
11 p.m. ... entertainment Friday and
Saturday evenings.
Back in the 1930s and 1940s, Carl's
laid claim to selling more 4H Blue
Ribbon steaks and chops than any
other restaurant in the country ...
Today, it is still nationally known for
its very high ranking in selling 4H
Blue Ribbon prize beef.
Give Frank oceans of credit for his
close following of Rosenfeld's gigantic
footsteps in attainment of dining suc-
cess ... Under Rosenfeld, Carl's Chop
House came a marathon distance
from the original small dining room
with its pool room that he turned
into another eating area, taking
Frenchie's Tool & Die next door to
enlarge the dining sector and the
next-door bank for one of Michigan's
largest bars.
Nobody seems to know for certain
exactly what anniversary this is for
Carl's Chop House ... but many insist
with stern certainty that it has gotten
better.
SOMETHING THAT hasn't hap-
pened this way in a long time ... two
fine major charitable fund-raising
events on the same night ... and each
a black-tie formal.
Too bad since it splits the atten-
dance in two and possibly prevents
many from attending either because
of a dual loyalty.
The Karmanos Cancer Institute's
23th Annual Dinner ... and the first
annual Aviator's Ball by Ronald
McDonald Houses of Detroit and
Ann Arbor ... will both be held
Saturday, May 14.
The Karmanos shindig will be in
the atrium of Ford Field on Brush in
downtown Detroit ... and the Ronald
McDonald formal is scheduled in the
Spirit Airlines hanger at Detroit
MetrOpolitan Airport in Romulus ...
Both will have dinner, dancing and
entertainment.
A shame whenever charitable fund-
raising organizations miss out on
receiving whatever help they can get in
raising dollars for their worthy efforts.
THEIR SECOND restaurant serv-
ing exotic Nepali food has been
opened by the owners of Everest
Express on Orchard Lake Road in
Farmington.
It is the new Kathmandu Chullo,
seating 65 on S. Washington, between
Fourth and Fifth in Royal Oak . ...
bossed by partners Pradip "Rocky"
Poudel and Nadal Gorges.
PRE-PASSOVER Kosher Peking
buffet dinner by caterer Jeffrey Rosen-
berg at Adat Shalom Synagogue, was a
lot of happiness for about 425 people.
Attendance would have been more,
says Jeffrey, but had to be cut off at
that amount being the evening before
Passover.
His first attempt at a Kosher
Chinese buffet, a short time back,
brought over 600, but wasn't the
night prior to a Jewish holiday.
A lot of wonderful conviviality and
laughter at the pre-Passover buffet ...
even with the paper plates.
GIGI'S KORNER ... "The master
of a friend sent this letter to a small
hotel he intended to stay at on his
vacation ... 'I would very much like to
bring my dog with me. Would you
permit me to keep him in my room
with me at night?'
"The hotel owner wrote back, `I've
been operating this hotel for many
years. In all that time, I've never had a
dog steal towels, bedclothes or silver-
ware, or pictures off the walls. I've
never had to evict a dog in the middle
of the night for being drunk or disor-
derly. I've never had a dog run out on
a hotel bill. Yes indeed, your dog is
welcome at my hotel. And if your dog
will vouch for you, you're welcome to
stay here, too."'
DID YOU KNOW DEPT. ... That
years ago, Duncan Hines, dining sage,
gave a top rating to the barbecued
beef sandwich and chicken pot pies at
Hedge's Wigwam on Woodward in
Royal Oak? ... That the steak and
baked potato at Flaming Embers on
Woodward at Grand Circus Park in
Detroit was among biggest sellers in
Detroit.
QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT..
Q. "This might sound silly, but I was
recently out with a date for the first
time, and he left a penny tip because
he said the service was so bad. Was it
the proper thing to do?" ... A.H.
A. Heck no. There might be times
when a person would feel like doing
this, but I think it is pretty bad and
rude. Even bringing a glass of water is
worth more than a penny. A lot of
young servers being hired today in
restaurants have never worked in one
or even been trained as to what to do
and what not to do. Better to tell the
manager or owner to help them out
with some training. ❑
