ed bringing Sachs to speak. "I just
kept reading and hearing about him,"
she said. "He's young, charismatic and
he takes chances. I have yet to read
about anyone who has gotten such
positive feedback from the press. I
knew he was special."
David Fink of West Bloomfield, a
former neighbor and a friend of the
Sachs family since grade school, says,
"There was never any question that
Jeff was going to do something
extraordinary. It was simply a question
of what."
Fink, director of Michigan's Office of
the State Employer in Lansing, says,
"You really have to give a lot of credit
to Jeff. He could have done anything
he wanted to do, but he chose to follow
in his parent's footsteps and work to
make the world a better place. His par-
ents inculcated in him his incredible
positive values of service to society."

"We're into huge U.N.-bashing, and
I must say it is extremely perplexing
and dismaying to me ... All the
attacks on the secretary general are
untoward propaganda from the
American right and quite irresponsi-
ble. I know the secretary general to
be one of the most decent people on
this planet.
"The thing that people should
understand fundamentally is that
there are two different sides of the
U.N. Because we don't agree politi-
cally with a lot of other countries is
not a reason to hit the U.N. as an
organization, but that is what we are
doing and it's a big mistake.
"I know the agencies like
UNICEF, the World Health
Organization, the Food and
Agriculture Organization and a -cou-
ple a dozen others to be highly pro-
fessional and very critical to the well-
being of the poor on the planet."

The Pope

"The pope has an enormous influ-
ence and moral claim on the world
that is brought to the issues of wealth
and poverty. I hope the new pope
continues to take on these issues as
John Paul II did, but also recognizes
the very specific challenges that

Africa faces whether its AIDS or that
the population is growing much too
fast. There's been no help on these
”

issues.

Corruption As An Eicuse

"It's the usual explanation that every-
body gives for any problem in these
places. But they don't understand
how there is almost no help being
given right now
"Aid is not being held back because
the corruption is uniquely high in
those places. They are ready to do
the job but they don't get the aid
because they are not seen as geo-
politically important...
"What's really going on is that the
strategists don't think it is worth-
while investing in these people, not
because they are especially concerned
about corruption but because they
don't think saving lives in Africa is
such a priority for the United States.
But I think that's wrong on many; -
many different levels.".

U.S. Misunderstandings

"To the extent [they know about
world poverty], they think it is either
just not solvable or is the fault of
these places themselves. Plus, people
tend to over-estimate drastically what
-we are already doing ... This is not
simply an argument about sympathy
or charity. it is actually a description
