Prayers For Pope
Youth Alliances Strong
The Jewish community salutes the
Conclave of Cardinals that elected
Pope Benedict XVI as spiritual leader
of the world's Catholic community.
He is the embodiment of the Roman
Catholic Church, but also will become
the moral conscience of the nations of
the world.
We pray that he be granted strength
and wisdom equal to his tasks. He will
be asked to address the global chal-
lenges of justice, peace and moral val-
ues.
The Jewish people has been deeply
grateful to his predecessor, John Paul
II, who showed great concern for rec-
onciliation of these two ancient peo-
ples. He turned a new path in
Catholic-Jewish relationships as he
sought to rectify the wrongs that were
perpetuated by earlier generations. He
led his people in the path of under-
standing and reconciliation.
We pray that Pope Benedict XVI
will continue that journey begun by
his predecessor. In this way, he would
bring about a new era of mutual
respect, dialogue and trust for all
humanity.
We share in the hope of the
Catholic community that Pope
Benedict XVI will bring blessing to his
people, his faith and to the entire
world.
Rabbi Irwin Groner
Your article on the cost of Jewish life
("Cost of Jewish Living," April 7,
page 29) touches on a critical problem
that won't be solved easily.
However, it should be pointed out
that one of the most effective pro-
grams that reach our children at a
critical stage in their development is
the synagogue-based youth move-
ment. They provide the same benefits
that the overnight summer camps do,
but all year long and in a very cost-
effective way.
The relationships that teens form,
the role models with whom they build
relationships, the inspiring message
that is substantive and that fosters a
continued connection with the syna-
gogue are indispensable. All this for
about $500 for an entire year of pro-
gramming,'making it one of the great-
est bargains in Jewish life.
I highly encourage parents to make
sure that their children take advantage
of these programs and that our com-
munity leaders take a more serious
approach at making sure that they are
well-funded.
