Playing The Dad

For Sam Pollak of Oak Park, the only
Jewish actor in the cast of seven, it's
been nine years since he played the
father in a JET production of a Neil
Simon play. He took on the paternal
role in Lost in Yonkers then, and he
plays Eugene and Stanley's dad in
Brighton Beach Memoirs. He also per-
formed in The Chosen for JET.
After 15 years in Detroit regional
theater, Pollak had given up on an act-
ing career and turned to such jobs as
night-club manager, cornfield maze
proprietor, new car test-drive director
for dealership personnel and marketing
company employee.
He made a theatrical comeback of
sorts after winning a part in a play
called Intimate Apparel for the Detroit
Repertory Theatre. Orbach tracked
him down "on the road" on one of his
jobs to offer him the JET role.
Pollak, 54 and single, was born in
Israel and came to Detroit with his
parents. He attended Wayne State
University, where he studied acting in
classes and workshops.
"It was a great way to meet girls," he
recalls, "but I also took acting seriously
and worked at the Attic Theatre and in
other local productions. The role in
Brighton Beach Memoirs is a real chal-
lenge because of the combination of
drama and comedy aspects."
Others in the cast are Jason Smith of
Garden City, Kristen Dailey of West
Bloomfield, Karen Sheridan of
Rochester, Shannon Ferrante of
Southgate, Rachel Nardecchia of Royal
Oak and Dax Anderson of Detroit.

JET's production of Brighton
Beach Memoirs runs May 4-June 5
at the Aaron DeRoy Theater in
the Jewish Community Center,
6600 West Maple, in West
Bloomfield. Performances are 7:30
p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays,
8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7:30
p.m. Sundays. On Wednesday,
May 25, there will be a 2 p.m.
matinee instead of the evening
performance. Tickets: $25-$37;
discounts for seniors are available.
Rush tickets, $15, are available
two hours before every show.
