Academics Boycott Israel
Papal Olive Branch
Londoni/TA— A British union of
university teachers launched a boycott
of two Israeli universities.
The Association of University
Teachers voted to suspend all links
with Haifa and Bar-Ilan universities,
and agreed to circulate to members a
statement from Palestinian organiza-
tions calling for a full-scale boycott of
Israeli academics.
Haifa University was accused of vic-
timizing an anti-Zionist lecturer, Ilan
Pappe, and Bar-Ilan was charged with
aiding a college in a West Bank settle-
ment. The decision was immediately
condemned by Jewish and academic
groups. The Board of Deputies, the
representative body of British Jewry,
described it as a "blinkered, irrespon-
sible and dangerous move.
"The members have voted for a
motion that is as misguided as it is
unbalanced, taking no account of
those moderate voices on all sides who
crave peace and dialogue," a Board of
Deputies spokesman said.
Ronnie Fraser, chair of the
Academic Friends of Israel U.K., said,
"If the sponsors of this boycotting
campaign succeeded in something, it
is only to undermine further progress,
collaboration and peace in the Middle
East and to marginalize the standing
of the AUT and its members in the
academic community."
Jerusalem/JTA— Pope Benedict XVI
extolled Jews for sharing a "spiritual
heritage" with Christians.
In a Vatican sermon Sunday mark-
ing his installation as pontiff, Benedict
offered greetings ro "my brothers and
sisters of the Jewish people, ro whom
we are joined by a great shared spiritu-
al heritage, one rooted in God's irrev-
ocable promises."
The German-born Benedict is
widely expected to pursue the path of
religious reconciliation forged by his
predecessor, John Paul II.
Rome's chief rabbi, Riccardo di Segni,
received a personal invitation to the
Sunday Mass but could not attend
due to Passover.

Moscow/JTA— A Russian airline will
fly brand-new Boeing 747 jets on its

begin using the 468-seat jumbo jets
between Moscow and Israel this sum-
mer as the number of flights between
Russia and the Jewish state increases.
El Al reportedly is mulling the pos-
sibility of a second daily flight to
Moscow.

U.S. Mayors: Visit Israel
Washington/JTA —U.S. mayors voiced
support for tourism to Israel. At the
23rd annual Jerusalem Conference of
Mayors earlier this month, the U.S.
Conference of Mayors expressed the
sentiment in a letter to Jerusalem
Mayor Uri Lupolianski, who hosted
the event, sponsored by the American
Jewish Congress Council for World
Jewry.
"Many of us came here in spite of
concerns voiced by family and friends.
Never while we Nvere here did we feel
that our safety -was in jeopardy. We
found Jerusalem and the other parts
of Israel which we visited to be peace-
ful and secure. When we return home
we will encourage others to visit Israel
so that they can learn about the coun-
try, meet its people and be able to see
many of the important historic sites."
The April 10-15 conference drew
62 mayors from South, Central and
North America, Europe, Africa and
Asia. The event offers mayors the
opportunity to tour Israel, meet Israeli
officials and network with each other.
On Mother's Day, show your appreciation by giving her a gift

Celebrating our
First Anniversary!
The Charge
Israel threatens its neighbors with
nuclear bombs.
The Answer
While Israel does not admit to
having nuclear weapons, its nuclear
program reportedly began in the
late 1950s after two wars launched
by the Arabs to annihilate it. Israel
is the refuge of the Jewish people,
the only Jewish nation, and the
preventer of another Holocaust
against the Jews. If it has nuclear
weapons, they are meant not as a
threat, but as a deterrent to the
destruction of the nation and its
Jewish community.
