Recipients of the first Borletti-

between 1999 and 2001.
Both the Jerusalem Music
Center and the Borletti-Buitoni
Trust have included performances

The quartet will perform the
complete Shostakovich cycles in
2006, to mark the centenary of
Shostakovich's birth. Concerts in
this series are scheduled in
Amsterdam, London, Berlin and
Vancouver.
"Some of Shostakovich's Quartets
are tragic in mood, for example No.
9, but during some of the most hor-
rific years in 20th-century Russia,
Shostakovich wrote wonderful,
uplifting music that always con-
tained hope," quartet members
wrote.
"We feel a particular affinity with
Shostakovich's quartets because they
are a commentary on a time and
atmosphere that we feel very close
to. Playing Shostakovich feels very
natural to us.''
