Joyous Music

Concert links U-M Hillel's Kol Hakavod
with JARC.

U

niversity of Michigan Hillel's a
capella group, Kol Hakavod
(KHK), performed a Purim
concert in costume for the JARC com-
munity March 27 at JARC's Katzman
Administration Building in
Farmington Hills.
This event is the first in a series of
joint ventures between students from
U-M Hillel and JARC, a Farmington
Hills-based nonprofit organization for
people with disabilities, said Rabbi
Jason Miller of U-M Hillel. He said
students will volunteer at JARC's
Spring Elation fund-raiser on May 15
as well as making kosher several
kitchens at JARC residences and lead-
ing Pesach seders.
The events will be sponsored by stu-
dents in the Hillel social action groups
Tzedek and Volunteers in Action.
Additionally, Dor Chadash, Michigan
Hillel's Conservative minyan, will host
some members of the JARC commu-
nity for Shabbat services and dinner
this spring.
"We are overjoyed with our new
relationship with U-M Hillel," said
Joyce Keller, JARC executive direc-
tor. "Each of our organizations has
so much to offer the other, and we
feel the connections that will be

forged between Hillel students and
the people we serve at JARC will
enrich everyone in powerful and
meaningful ways."
The concert was open to the public
and more than 100 people attended.
Student Tori Roth of Cincinnati,
business manager for the a capella
group, said, "This really made us feel
good to be able to bring our music to
this great organization. We hope to
make it an annual even"
The dozen college students who
performed included Toby Singer of
Ann Arbor, Jason Claude of Merrick,
N.Y., Allie Willensky of Omaha,
Neb., Alli Gutwillig of Morris
Plains, N.J., Jane Kleyman of
Moscow, Russia, Ben Hamburger of
Potomac, Md., Stephanie Persin of
West Bloomfield, Stephanie
Ablowitz of Boulder, Colo., Casey
Cohen of Philadelphia, Noah
Liebman of Farmington Hills, Emily
Friedman of West Bloomfield and
Roth.
"I think I had the most fun singing
for JARC than at any of our other
concert," Gutwillig said. "The crowd
was one of the most loving and wel-
