Women Honor Ex-President

Beverly Canvasser, past president of
the Temple Beth El Sisterhood, will be
honored Tuesday, May 3, at the sister-
hood's annual donor luncheon.
A past president of District 11,
National Federation of Temple
Sisterhoods and a
former national
board member of
NFTS, she
served, with her
husband, Robert,
as president of
the temple's
Married Group.
She currently sits
on the temple's
library and
Canvasser
archives commit-
tees. Canvasser is also a past president
of the League of Jewish Women.
The May 3 donor day will begin
with boutique shopping at 10 a.m.
followed by a noon luncheon and
fashion show by Vicki Howard. The
boutiques will remain open until 2:30
p.m. Cost of the event is 545. For

Study Series Focus: Passover

Detroit Conservative Movement
Scholar in Residence Howard N.
Lupovitch will open a three-part lec-
ture series during Passover week tided
"The Zionist Revolution" starting
Tuesday evening, April 26, at
Congregation B'nai Moshe.
The opening lecture in the series
will explore "Zionist Views of
Passover." Each session in the series
will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a one-
hour lecture, followed by time for
questions and discussion. The series is
sponsored by the synagogue's Kolel

Moshe Institute for Lifelong Jewish
Learning.
There is a charge for each lecture of
510 at the door or $25 for the series.
There is no charge for members of
B'nai Moshe. High-school and college
students, professional Jewish educa-
tors, and holders of Kolel Moshe
Passport to Torah are also welcome to
attend at no charge. Advance registra-
don is encouraged but not required.
The second lecture will take place
Thursday, May 12; the third will take
place Tuesday, June 7.
Each of the lectures in the series will
be self-contained and can be attended
independently. In addition, Kolel
Moshe is offering other learning
opportunities: On Saturday, April 23,
there will be a special service schedule
and three free, drop-in study sessions.
On Wednesday, April 27, Rabbi
Pachter will present a shiur. On
Thursday, April 28, the sisterhood will
present a musical shiur.
Kolel Moshe also offers two Shabbat
morning study groups.
Every Monday at noon, Kolel
Moshe offers a complimentary video
replay of a recent lecture program.
Starting May 8, Kolel Moshe will
offer a new "Beginner-Plus Learn to
Read Hebrew" class.

Lynn Liberman as its spiritual leader.
Rabbi Liberman is the spiritual leader
at Congregation
Knesset Israel in
Pittsfield, Mass. She
received her ordina-
tion from the
Jewish Theological
Seminary in New
York in 1993.
Her appointment
will become official
once the contract

and Rabbi Francine Roston of New
Jersey (with Michigan roots) are the
first women senior rabbis to be
appointed at Conservative synagogues
with more than 500 families.
The Beth Shalom search committee
was chaired by Mandy Garver. Rabbi
David Nelson, the synagogue's rabbi for
the past 33 years, will serve as rabbi
emeritus and will remain active in the
Detroit community.
