RON GOTHELF
City: Huntington
Woods
Kudos: ALS Volun-
teer, Youth Mentor

Although Ron Gothelf grezv up in
Chicago, he has become an active mem-
ber of the Metro Detroit Jewish commu-
nity he now calls home. When he
learned that his father had ALS
(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou
Gehrigs disease), he got involved in
fund-raising efforts for the Michigan
chapter of the national ALS Association.
His current energies are directed
toward planning a wine tasting and
auction to be held the evening of June
18 at the Ford Motor Company
Conference and Event Center in
Dearborn.
In addition, Ron is a math tutor at
Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit in Farmington Hills, where his
two daughters, Freya, 11, and Talia, 6,
are students.

How did you become involved with
this year's ALS fund-raiser?
"After my father was diagnosed with
the disease, I wanted to find a way to
help the ALS Association in its efforts
to fund more research and provide
support to people who have the dis-
ease.
"I heard they were planning a wine

tasting and auction, and I offered to
help because I have some expertise in
that area. When they asked me to join
the fund-raising committee, I was
glad to accept."

What are some of your other volun-
teer activities?
"I have been working with two
fifth-grade boys at Albert Einstein
Elementary School in Oak Park
through a mentoring program spon-
sored by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. I help them
with their homework, lend an ear
when they need to talk, and offer
guidance and advice. It's been a b
very well, and I plan to continue see-
ing them after the school year ends.
"I also volunteer in my daughter
Talia's first-grade classroom at Hillel,
helping the kids with math."

What are your future plans regarding
volunteering in the community?
"I definitely plan to continue work-
ing with the kids; I feel that I've been

blessed in many ways and I want to
give something back. I also intend to
become more involved with the ALS
Association. ALS is a very expensive,
progressive disease for which there's
no known cure, so it's important to
continue research and to provide pro-
grams and services for ALS patients
and their families."
