Bernard will receive the 2005 Activist of the Year Award from the Jewish Community Council at the organization's annual meeting Wednesday, May 25, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The program will feature Daniel Ayalon, Israel's ambassador to the United States, who will discuss the Israeli peace strategy Bernard during his keynote address. Bernard 's community service and his efforts to build relationships with legislators and communal leaders on behalf of the Jewish community have made him an advocate for the ages. He worked to protect the safety net of governmental funding for vulnera- ble citizens, was instrumental in secur- ing ongoing state funding for mental health and social welfare services deliv- ered by Jewish agencies. He played an essential role in several of the council- led tours of Detroit Jewish social serv- ice agencies for Michigan-elected offi- cials. Bernard is past co-chair of Detroit Live, a member of the State of Michigan Task-Force for People with Developmental Disabilities and Chronic Mental Illness and a board member of Volunteer Impact. Divorce Support Group The National Council of Jewish Women/Space for Changing Families will offer a divorce support (drop-in) group. Facilitated by Geri Spilman and Andy Mather, this support group will help men and women deal with the many conflicted feelings regarding divorce and separation. The group will meet every Monday from 7-9 p.m. (except for Monday, April 25). The fee is $5 per session. No pre-registration is required.
