From top: "Keeping in touch with the Israelis I meet" — that's how 14-year-olds Ariella Yedwab of Commerce, Alex Mark of Farmington Hills, and Rachel Belsky and Rachel Goodman, both of West Bloomfield, responded to the question "Why is Israel important to me." Atara Krakoff; 7, and Rachel Fishman, 8, both of Southfield, deco- rate one of several pillowcases to be given to Israeli teen campers visiting Detroit this summer Rachel Shuman, 12, of Farmington Hills and her mom, Stacey, share a laugh with Janet Belsky of West Bloomfield. which makes this trip one of the most special trips imagi- nable," said Congregation Shaarey Zedek Rabbi Joseph Krakoff, who, with Temple Israel Rabbi Paul Yedwab, will lead the mission's clergy contingent, which includes so far Rabbis Jonathan and Lauren Berkun of Shaarey Zedek, Harold Loss of Temple Israel, Dannel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom, Daniel Nevins of Adat Shalom Synagogue and Cantor Michael Smolash of Temple Israel. Another three-generation family on the mission is Dov and Tracey Lisner of Bloomfield Township and their kids, bat-mitzvah cele- brant Emily, 12, and Allie, 9. Also joining them will be grandparents Seymour and Anita Cywiak of Farmington Hills. "Emily's going to be partic- ipating in the service that they do for all the bar and bat mitzvah children on the mission," said Tracey. "She'll have her bat mitzvah service at Adat Shalom two weeks before the mission and then have the celebration in Israel." For grandmother Anita, it will be her second trip to Israel, but yet new. "To share this experience with my chil- dren and grandchildren is wonderful," she said. "It'll have more meaning." Jay and Mary Knoll of Bloomfield Township are bringing their four children, Emily, 14, Allison, 13, Sarah, 10, and Josh, 8. For all six of them, it will be their first time in Israel. "There was no better time than this — to go as a family," said Jay. "It's all planned out and there will be friends and people we know on the trip." At the rally, mission songs were led by a quartet of Lisa Soble-Siegmann, Cantor Smolash and Rabbis J. Berkun and Nevins. Following the event, fam- ilies were invited to stay for a concert by Jewish rocker Rick Recht, spon- sored by the Sarah and Harry Laker Memorial Fund.
