Abstract And Playful

The Moriahs, married in Israel in
1978, moved back to Israel when
their sons were 7 and 9. They decided
that it would be difficult for the boys
to make the move if they were any
older.
"I became a senior at Berkley High
School in the year that my father got
a job in Pontiac," Andi Moriah
recalls. "I went to Israel for the sum-
mer after graduation and then studied
at Wayne State University for a year."
After earning a journalism degree at
the University of Missouri, she
became a writer and editor for a B'nai
B'rith magazine in Washington, D. C.
Later, after deciding to make aliyah,
she found work as an editor at The

Jerusalem Post.
"I'm a Zionist and loved being in
Israel,". says Andi Moriah, who tried
drawing and decided she was better at
art appreciation. "When I first got to
Israel, I went to a language lab and
met my husband, who was working in
the building. I loved his art because
he had a great sense of color and
movement.
"In his Haggadah, I like his use of
thin, elongated figures because that's
how people of the time of the Exodus
drew them. I also like that he includes
modern images of Jerusalem. There
are all kinds of references and differ-
ent time frames, and the juxtaposition
makes the art exciting. It's abstract
and playful while telling the story."
As Andi Moriah watched the devel-
opment of-the book while being treat-
ed successfully for leukemia, she was
glad that something beautiful could
come out of the ugliness of disease.
She began to pay attention to the text
and study it in a way she had never
before done.
Her husband designed a Passover
coaster for Hadassah in appreciation
of the care she received at the hospi-
tal. The Cup of Miriam artifact is now
being used as part of a Hadassah
fund-raising program.
"The Haggadah reflects a very seri-
ous time in our lives, and we found
inner strength by doing something
that reached beyond us," says Avner
Moriah, whose studio now resides in a
new family home built in Israel. "I'm
dyslexic, and this is my first book. I'm
a workaholic and an insomniac, and
I'm happy with a brush and paper. I
feel as if I'm living in the Garden of
Eden."
