SPIRITUAL CONNECTIONS

with the kids, and I loved the dimen-
sions of Jewish music.
"The connections and spirituality
motivated me to start writing Jewish
music, and I built a recording studio
in my basement to make the CD Toy.
That CD took off with youth groups,
and I began appearing at other camps
and synagogues. After that summer, I
dated the guitar student who was the
head of the camp, and she is now my
wife."
Recht and his wife, Elisa, have two
sons and collaborate on writing
music with youngsters in mind. One
of his most personally meaningful
songs, "Kobi's Lullaby," was written
for his oldest son and included in
Recht's 2002 album, Free to Be the
Jew in Me.

Artist In Residence

"My band members are not Jewish, but
they're so into the spirituality of the
music," Recht says about Stringfield,
who has appeared with Starnineteen
and Just Add Water, and Detering, who
has worked with Theo Peoples of the
Temptations and Four Tops.
"It's cool for me to travel with non-
Jews and get exposure in multi-ethnic
shows. I believe that if these two find
meaning in the songs, then everyone
will. We often perform original music
to go along with Jewish 14urgy, and
that offers history, wisdom and impor-
tant values."
Recht, who stands up as a strong
rocker for the teens and sits on the
floor to sing with the very young, is
working on his next CD, Tear Down
the Walls, which is about dismantling

racism. He is artist in residence at
United Hebrew Congregation in St.
Louis and is making a full-length fea-
ture film about Jewish rock music.
"I'm going to have a kids' zone on
my Web site so that families can go
there to participate in Jewish educa-
tional games," says Recht, who solicits
donations for his Jewish educational
projects. "I'm also planning to launch
a Web site for Jewish song leaders so
that people can share music and
ideas." 0

Rick Recht will perform 7 p.m.

Gossip columnists say that JAKE
- HOFFMAN, 24, the actor
son of DUSTIN HOFF-
MAN, is dating ZOE
WINKLER, 24, the
daughter of HENRY
WINKLER.
Jake, one of Hoffman's
four children with his sec-
ond wife, LISA, who is
Jewish, has only gotten
small parts so far.
In 2001, he talked about
Dustin and his family:
"[His fame] hasn't really
affected me because it's
been this way since I was
born. If it had happened
overnight, it would've been
more of a shock. But when some-
thing's the same way since the day
you're born, you get used to it.
"I don't want to sound cheesy, but I
think [my family] is untraditional in
how close we are. We have family din-
ners pretty much every night. We're
all incredibly close. It's amazing."

Likewise, Zoe Winkler comes from
a very close-knit family consisting of
Henry's three children with his
(Jewish) wife, STACEY, and her son
from a previous marriage, whom
Henry adopted.

Dustin Hoffman, right,. and

son Jake: "Incredibly close.:'

We don't know much about Zoe
other than she's pretty and that she
went to the University of Wisconsin
at Madison. (We'll keep you posted if
the two families have something to
celebrate.)
