Topics run the gamut from college classes to pop culture. The catch? It's all in Hebrew! Shulchan Ivrit or "Hebrew Conversation Table" is a program run in conjunction with University of Michigan's Hebrew program and U-M Hillel. Participants order their drinks, then push tables together. Sometimes they split up by skill level, and other times everyone stays together. The various language skills sometimes result in confusion, but nothing a couple of hand gestures or the occasional word in English can't clarify. On average, between 10 and 20 par- ticipants show up. Since September, Miriam Levine of Huntington Woods, a U-M junior, has been running Shulchan Ivrit. A trip to Israel last summer reminded the Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit alum how much she enjoyed speaking Hebrew. "I missed the opportunity to use Hebrew, particularly after this sum- mer," she said. When she began working with Shulchan. Ivrit, the group was meeting at Hillel. She and Shachar Pinsker, a Hebrew language professor at U-M, decided meeting at a coffee shop would encourage more people to attend, and U-M Hillel agreed to pay for coffee.
