T
he only class that would fit into
his Harrison High School
schedule 16 years ago has led a -
Farmington Hills native to win journal-
ism's biggest award.
Charles A. Ornstein, a Metro section
reporter for the Los Angeles Times, was
part of a four-person team awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for public service last
week. The team conducted a 15-month
investigation of malpractice and mis-
management at Martin Luther King Jr.-
Drew Medical Center. The problems led
to neglect and even deaths among the _
hospital's mostly black and poor
patients.
Ornstein is a
graduate of Hillel
Day School of
Metropolitan
Detroit and
Harrison Hi
both in Farming-
ton Hills, and the
University of
Pennsylvania in
Ornstein
Philadelphia. As a
sophomore at
Harrison, he took a journalism class
because nothing else worked into his
schedule. He rose to editor-in-chief of
the Harrison Catalyst, which earned a
Columbia All American Gold Award
under his leadership.
In college, he "walked on" to the staff
of the Daily Pennsylvanian and nine
months later was named reporter of the
year. He later served as editor-in-chief.
After junior and senior year, he
worked internships at the Dallas
Morning News and was hired as a beat
reporter, covering two Dallas suburbs
and the weekend police beat. He won
the Dallas Press Club Katie Award for
two consecutive years as best business
writer in the five-state Southwest area. •
After declining an offer from the Wall
Street Journah in 2001 Ornstein accept-
ed the position at the L.A. Times.
Ornstein is married, and his parents
are Alex and Harriet Ornstein of
Farmington Hills. His sister Deborah is
a teacher at Hillel Day School and the
Temple Israel and Shaarey Zedek reli-
gious schools. ❑
