New Leader,
New Goals
T

eri Giannetti,
who will take
over as Yeshivat
Akiva's secular studies
principal in July, has
been principal at West
Bloomfield's Abbott
Middle School and
Walled Lake's Glengary
Elementary School.
Most recently,
Giannetti and her hus-
band, who also is an
educator, spent six years
teaching in Saudi
Teri Giannetti
Arabia. Giannetti worked
primarily with American students.
After several years, she was asked to
begin the country's first high school for
foreign students. Before this school
opened, teens had been forced by law
to leave Saudi Arabia to continue their
education. Once it was established, the
government allowed only a handful of
Saudi Arabian students to attend the
high school.
"To start a high school in three
months from nothing is quite an
endeavor," Giannetti said. "We learned
to be really creative — to think outside
the box."
Dr. Gary Faber, superintendent of
the West Bloomfield Schools, called
Giannetti "a consummate professional."
"She is knowledgeable in the educa-
tional research and skilled at building
relationships with all facets of the
school community — students, teach-
ers and parents," he said. "I don't know
anyone I could recommend more high-
ly to lead the school."
Among Giannetti's strengths are cur-

riculum development
and organization, Dr.
Faber said, including
aligning curriculum to
state standards and
benchmarks. And if
you can't get along
with Teri Giannetti,
you can't get along
with anybody."
Rabbi Yigal Tsaidi,
Akiva's head of school,
said the new secular
studies principal has
the potential to "bring
the school to the next
level."
Mark Nadel, president of the school's
board of directors, called Giannetti "an
energetic, highly motivated leader"
"We are confidant she will be able to
articulate a mission for the school based
on deep values about education and
quality learning," Nadel said. "She is
clearly someone who will have clear
goals and will be able to drive achieve-
ment in pursuit of those goals."
Although she is not Jewish, Giannetti
said she is convinced that "people are
people."
"I sense that Akiva has a very dedi-
cated staff and very dedicated parents,"
she said. "I know I am filling some big
shoes [in replacing Dr. Charles
Domstein], but I am confident that
people will accept me for who I am."
Akiva has stiff competition for stu-
dents, especially at the high school
level. However, she said, "Pretty soon,
people will be beating down the doors
to get in." ❑
