it and asked me to be in the opening

Bill Goldberg portrays the homicidal
Santa.
Newly energized as a result of work-
ing on Living With Fran, the actress
also is penning a screenplay for a
romantic comedy that she'd like to
direct, having had experience behind
the lens on The Nanny and an episode
of Strong Medicine.
"I love directing and producing,"
she says. "It's almost as creatively sat-
isfying as acting, so I try to do it
whenever I can. I hope to direct a few
episodes of this show, too."
Since writing Cancer Schmancer, her
memoir about her battle with uterine
cancer, Drescher has become a
women's health care advocate and has
lobbied in Washington on behalf of
those issues as well as arts education.
"I'm trying to push forward a bill
called "Johanna's Law" that will
appropriate more money for cancer
screening tests," she says. "Early
detection is what equals survival."
Nearly five years cancer-free,
Drescher asserts that her illness gave
her "a purpose in life that I didn't
have before. When I hear how much
my book has helped people, it just
makes me feel so good. And even
though after the illness I [lost the
ability] to bear a child, I gave birth to
a book that saves people every day.
That is something I'm extremely
proud of."
She maintains her health by hiking,
doing Pilates, walking on the beach
near her Malibu home and following
an organic diet.
Wearing sexy clothes — and occa-
sionally doffing them — on screen,
Drescher has an incentive to stay in
shape.
Drescher admits her real-life rela-
tionship with a younger ex has been
difficult to put behind her, but she is
trying to date men closer to her own
age, "inside of 10 years.
"I'm over the aspect of wanting to
help someone and guide and grow
someone up. Now I would like to be
with a man who knows himself a little
better, who has fewer insecurities and
is more of an equal to me financially.
I'm trying to date men who are more
my contemporaries." ❑
Living With Fran premieres 8:30-
9 p.m. Friday, April 8, on the
WB. A second episode will air the
same night from 9:30-10 p.m.
