Michele Grossman, with whom he
performed more than 100 concerts in
a European tour and produced a CD
of the music of Ravel and Beethoven.
Grossman met his wife, pianist Lida
Lopez, after one of his recitals.
"Within a year, we were married,"
he says. "It's the best thing that ever
happened to me."
The pair have two children, Cecelia,
2, and Mikhail, 7 months.
Grossman had a busy fall and win-
ter, including four concerto perform-
ances and two recitals during the
month of October alone. He just
returned from Korea, where he played
the Brahms violin concerto with the
KBS (Korean Broadcasting System)
Symphony Orchestra.

Working Composer

Liebermann and Grossman have been
friends and collaborators since their
days at Jailhard, where the composer
earned bachelor's, master's and doctor-
al degrees. Grossman presented the
world premiere of Liebermann's
Quintet for Clarinet, Piano and String
Trio and the New York premiere of his
Concerto for Violin, Piano and String
Quartet.
Today, the two live a few blocks
from each other in Weehawkin, N.J.
"The ferry boat takes literally five
minutes to Manhattan," Grossman
says.
A New York native, Liebermann, 44,
says he was "was forced to take piano
lessons by my mother at an early age,
and I hated it."
However, he began composing
immediately, even before he knew how
to put notes on paper. "I made up my
own notation," he says.
The young man began formal com-
position studies at age 14. He made
his performing debut two years later at
Carnegie Recital Hall. Among the
works on the program was his Piano
Sonata, Op.1, which he composed
v.Then he was 15.
"I knew I wanted to be a composer,"
he says. "After that first sonata, I never
looked back."
Today, Liebermann makes his living
entirely through composition. Among
the awards he's won are the 1989
Charles Ives Fellowship, given by the
American Academy and Institute of
Arts and Letters, and the 2001
American Composers Invitational
prize, awarded by the Van Cliburn
Competition.
Superstar James Galway premiered
the composer's Concerto for Flute and
Orchestra, which the flutist had com-

missioned, as well as his Concerto for
Flute, Harp and Orchestra.
In May 1996, Liebermann's Concerto
for Piccolo premiered at the National
Flute Association Convention in New
York. After the work's performance by
Jan Gippo, of the Saint Louis
Symphony, an audience of some 2,500
other flutists gave the performance a
cheering standing ovation, according
to a New York Times review
"The uninhibited neo-Romantic
style of Lowell Liebermann goes down
well with me," wrote reviewer Peter G.
Davis of New York magazine, "because
it is so unselfconscious and applied
with such skill."
In 1995, the Opera de Monte
Carlo commissioned Liebermann's
first opera, The Picture of Dorian
Gray. Liebermann is now working on
his second opera, based on the
Nathanial West novel Miss
Lonelyhearts, commissioned by the
Juilliard School in celebration of its
100th anniversary. The premiere will
be the climax of the celebration on
April 26, 2006.
"When I write a piece of any kind,
the next time I like to be totally differ-
ent," Liebermann says. "Basically, I
write the kind of music that I would
like to listen to." Li
