The doctors of the Michigan
Chiropractic Center have
just returned to the United
States, after serving the people
of Costa Rica for the past
six years.

asked to go," says Dr. Zaltz, who
lives in Huntington Woods with
his wife, Barbara, and their tod-
dler twin daughters.
"I like the team approach
because everyone is important to
helping these children," said Dr.
Zaltz, who earned a bachelor's
degree from Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, a med-
ical degree from the University
of Pennsylvania and completed
orthopedic residencies at Boston
Children's Hospital and
Massachusetts General Hospital.
The doctors who take the
trips see a total of about 350
children in various clinics, then
pick the ones they feel need
the surgery most immediately.
They leave the remaining
patients for subsequent teams.
The visiting surgeons train the
local doctors during rounds and
lectures at the host hospital,
Foundacion Hospital San Jose,
Guadalajara de Buga (Valle del
Cauca).
The goal of the Silver Service
Foundation is to provide access
to quality medical care for chil-
dren in underprivileged and
underserved areas of the world.
Programs are funded by dona-
tions made in the United States
and Colombia.
"We've been doing fewer rou-
tine cases because the
Colombian doctors have learned
to take care of them," explains
Dr. Zaltz, who also does research
into the physiology of growth.
"The hospital we use is clean,
safe and well-run, but we do
bring some of our own supplies."
Dr. Zaltz, who grew up in
Toronto, thinks of this experi-
ence as part of the Jewish con-
cept of tikkun olam, making the
world a better place. The only
drawback is being away from his
wife and young children.
"This program benefits
Colombia and the United
States," says Dr. Zaltz, who can
speak Spanish and doesn't need
one of the translators provided
for the visitors. "The children
are helped, and all of the doctors
involved share their skills and
learn from each case." ❑
