Barret Sisters.
Nelson's recordings include The

Best of Joshua Nelson, An Evening
Prayer, Hebrew Soul, Live at the West
Hartford Jewish Film Festival and Out
of the Depths. His next release will be
with the Klezmatics, part of a new
international touring partnership.
"Joshua Nelson is the perfect
blend of American and Jewish
music," Cantor Smolash says.
"Jewish music changes as it is influ-
enced by the culture, and Joshua is
expressing Jewish prayer in a style
that is current in America."
Although the guest composer is
from Canada, he infused his new
piece with a Motown sound.
"The music for liturgy is usually slow
and beautiful, but my goal was to make
this composition uplifting and fun," says
Posner, 34, who usually creates music for
films, TV shows and commercials. "I'm
very familiar with the popular music
that came out of Detroit, and my
arrangement of Mi Chamocha will
remind people of those sounds."
Posner, whose range of work reach-
es from Disney animation to beer
commercials, found this first religious

assignment personally meaningful
and is bringing his family — includ-
ing his wife, parents and aunt — to
the Temple Israel concert, a program
he considers a very big event in his
life. He also is pleased that Joshua
Nelson will be the vocalist.
Nelson, as hobbyist, would seem to
fit right in with Detroit culture. He
collects and drives antique cars.
"There are many Jewish people who
feel disassociated with the Jewish
community, and I hope this kind of
music helps bring them back," says
Nelson, who has a Yemenite Jewish
girlfriend and is planning a big seder
in his home, where collard greens will
join the more traditional dishes.
"I'm also going to be pushing for a
Grammy that recognizes Jewish
music." ❑

Joshua Nelson will perform in a
free concert 3 p.m. Sunday,
April 10, at Temple Israel, 5725
Walnut Lake Road, in West
Bloomfield. (248) 661-3620.
