later, the Maize Rage withdrew their
candidates, saying their ties to the
Athletic Department posed a legal
problem.
About one-fourth of the winning
candidates for both the MSA and
LSA-SG are Jewish. In addition to
Yahkind, successful Jewish candidates
students from Metro Detroit include:
• MSA — Allen Zeitlin,
Farmington Hills (LSA); Elizabeth
Harris, Farmington Hills (Art and
Design); Zack Yost, Farmington Hills
(Engineering); Ari Liner, Bloomfield
Hills (Kinesiology); Perry Teicher,
West Bloomfield;
• LSA-SG — Nate Fink, West
Bloomfield; Justin Benson, West
Bloomfield.
While MSA President Levine
expects another divestment resolu-
tion will be brought to MSA next
year, he says its chance of passage is
slim.
"As chair of the assembly, I aim to
be impartial; but when Israel and the
Jewish community unnecessarily
come under an attack through the
guise of divestment, I will not sit idly
by," said Levine, also crediting Jewish
students with effective activism.
"I feel confident that the strong
Jewish community on campus will
continually articulate clear and
rational arguments that will squelch
the chances of such resolutions pass-
ing in the future," he said.
MSA Representative and Hillel
activist Perry Teicher says the votes
against divestment and for his party
sent a similar message.
"The vote against divestment
proved to the campus that the MSA
no longer desires to make misguided
and one-sided statements," said
Teicher. "The overwhelming vote for
us demonstrates that students want
the MSA to concentrate on improve-
ments that will directly help them
instead of dealing solely with ideo-
logical battles."
He added, "I think this showed
students that we are more con-
cerned with implementing ideas
for the student body than political
bickering." CI
