DON COHEN Special to the Jewish News Ann Arbor 1 ust a \meek after an anti-Israel divestment resolution was soundly defeated by the University of Michigan student gov- ernment, students activists and lead- ers of the anti-divestment effort were elected to fill the top two posts of the University's student government for the 2005-2006 school year. Jesse Levine, a 2I-year-old junior from Brookville, N.Y., who is study- ing English and political science, was elected presi- dent of the Michigan Student Assembly (MSA) as the head of the Students 4 Michigan slate. This slate won all Levine but one of the open seats over the sin- gle-issue Defend Affirmative Action Party. Literature, Science and Arts sophomore Andrew Yahkind of West Bloomfield, also part of the Students Yahkind 4 Michigan, will serve as the LSA Student Government (LSA-SG) president. Levine and Yahkind were criticized by the Maize Rage Party campaign director, who told the Michigan Daily newspaper editorial board that there should be concern that both are "white and Jewish." The Maize Rage's candidates were all white and not Jewish. "As a Jew and grandson of two concentration camp survivors, including one from Auschwitz, this issue is personal," wrote Students 4 Michigan Campaign Manager Stuart Wagner of West Bloomfield in an e- mail to the campus Jewish commu- nity.
