ERIN GREENBERGER City: Birmingham Kudos: Aiding Adoptees • second homes • investment properties Erin Greenberger, I2-year-old daughter of Drs. Marc Greenberger and Julie Buch, celebrated her bat mitzvah March 12 at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township. As part of her mitzvah project, she decided to do a project that really hit home. She collect- - ed items for "grow bags" to be given to children awaiting adoption in Russia and Ukraine. Erin's sister Lexi, almost 3, was adopted from Moscow in May 2003 when she was 1 year old. Erin's grand- parents, Eileen and Bob Greenberger of West Bloomfield and Marcia and Alvin Buch of Farmington Hills, say they were especially touched by the gesture. When she's not playing with her sib- lings, including Jonathan, 9, and Mitchell, 1, Erin spends a lot of time at the ice rink. Her synchronized skating team came in seventh in the country this year. She is a seventh grade student at Birmingham Covington Middle School. How did you come up with the idea of a "grow bag?" "My mom told me about them. They took one when they went to Moscow to get Lexi. My parents went • debt consolidation together first, then my mom went and brought Lexi back." What's in a grow bag?" "The grow bags will be given to the children in orphanages who have not yet been adopted. The idea of the grow bags is to help the waiting chil- dren grow up healthy. Good things for the grow bags are Children's Tylenol and Motrin or Advil (aceta- minophen and ibuprofen), Benadryl, Infants' Tylenol and Motrin, chil- dren's multivitamins, diaper-rash cream, antibiotic ointment, new infants' and children's clothing and new stuffed animals." How did you collect the items? "I put a letter in with my invita- tion, made a flyer and talked to peo- ple on my block. I also asked people to bring the stuff to my party." How much did you collect? "We had six really big garbage bags full of the stuff. We delivered it to a lady from FRUA (Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption), and she put together the bags that will be taken over by parents adopt- ing children. It made me feel really good because it could have been my sister getting this stuff." — Keri Guten Cohen, story development editor Cover Story 29 Cost Of Jewish Living Examining the spiritual return on the financial investment.
