We found it got the adults more
involved, and the kids still loved it."
Many people choose DJs for bar
and bat mitzvahs because the pre-
teens want all of the music to sound
just like it does on the radio, and
some bands do not play hip-hop
and rap.
"Kids listen to a lot of hip-hop and
want to be engaged the whole night,"
explains Sid Zack, owner of Zack
Entertainment in Walled Lake and
leader of the band Chateau. "That's
where it's best to have a DJ.
"But there are people who use a
combination of bands and DJs
because they want the live entertain-
ment value, but they also want hip-
hop, alternative music and contests,"
says Zack. "The DJ does that, while
the band plays disco, funk, Big Band,
Motown, R & B.
"High school kids like more styles
of music, and by the time they're
ready to get married, they want a wide
variety of music."
Multi-piece bands can range in price
from $4,000 to $10,000 for four
hours of entertainment. Another
option can be a duo or a one-man
band. Duos often cost $1,500 to
$2,000, while a one-man band can be
$700 to $1,500.
"Rennie Kaufman is a one-man band
who has a voice that will take your
breath away," says Joe Jelasic. "One-
man bands often perform live over
sequenced music, and most of them are
musicians, with a live keyboard or gui-
tar, in addition to vocals. It sounds like
you've got a full 6- or 8-piece band."
When Adrienne Ruby married

Herschel Fink in January 2004, the
Orchard Lake residents wanted just a
pianist for both the ceremony and
reception at Knollwood Country
Club. "I just wanted soft background
music during the reception because it
was a second wedding," says
Adrienne. "I used Henry Feinberg. I
knew I wanted All You Need is Love by
the Beatles as we walked down the
aisle because we had both been wid-
owed and were starting over. I dis-
cussed it with Henry, and he knew
how to arrange it to make it perfect
for me."
Adrienne often plans parties at
Knollwood, where she helps choose
bands based on themes and who will
attend. "For the formal President's
Ball, Simone Vitale or Intrigue are
great because they play a wide variety.
For a Motown sound, I love KGB
because they do a dinner-club show,
their dance routines are like the
Temptations, and it's really, really
fun," she says.
Often, for more budget-sensitive
events, wonderful duos like Rock and
Soul are used. Joe Jelasic recommends
using R and D, Rick and Dana
Leider, who are a talented duo that
can play a huge range of music.
"Rick has the gift of vocal imper-
sonation," says Jelasic. "If he does
Satchmo, he sounds just like
Satchmo."
Jelasic suggests novelty groups, such
as '50s bands, Elvis and Frank Sinatra
performers, and island music bands as
a fun choice for a less formal party.
Just remember. It's your party.
