CC Association of North
America, the central agency for
the Jewish Community Center
Movement, has named Arlene Sorkin
as the director of a new initiative —
the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest.
Sorkin has begun working from her
West Bloomfield home and will join
the staff in the JCC Association's
Manhattan office in early April, corn-
muting from her new home in Staten
Island, New York.
ArtsFest's mission is to enable JCCs
to reach out to a wider teen audience
through the arts. It is
designed to inspire
Jewish teens —
through a combina-
tion. of workshop,
performance, exhibi-
tion, competition and
social activities — to
develop their individ-
Sorkin
uality while strength-
ening Jewish bonds.
ArtsFest will be piloted in two cities
beginning in the summer of 2006,
with 300-500 expected to participate.
"I am thrilled to be involved in this
exciting new initiative," Sorkin said,
"which will give teens the opportunity
to express themselves through the arts as
they explore their own Jewish journeys."
Originally from Philadelphia, Sorkin
moved to West Bloomfield in 1996
with her husband, David, when he
became executive director of the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit. She received a
bachelor's degree in business adminis-
tration from Temple University in
Philadelphia and a master's of social
work from Bryn Mawr School of
Social Work and Social Research in
Pennsylvania. She practiced clinical
social work for 12 years.
Most recently, Sorkin and Patty
Ceresnie of West Bloomfield, co-
founded IlluminArt Productions, a
company that uses theater for preven-
tion education. They have been tour-
ing their production, For Our
Daughters, a multimedia play with
music about surviving breast cancer, in
metro Detroit for two years.
In addition, they brought Illusion
Theater's Project TRUST (Teaching
and Reaching Using Students and
Theater) to West Bloomfield High
School and Lahser High School. In
TRUST, actors are assembled to bring
bullying- and violence-prevention
plays to elementary and middle school
students in the community. North
Farmington High School will join the
peer-educator sites in the fall of 2005.
Sorkin will continue as the adminis-
trator and consultant with IlluminArt.
Prior to starting IlluminArt, Sorkin
was the ECHO (Educating our
Community about Homosexuality
through Outreach) program director
for the Michigan Jewish AIDS
Coalition (MJAC).
As a volunteer in Detroit, Sorkin
chaired the opening ceremonies of the
JCC Maccabi Games at the Palace of
Auburn Hills in 1998, was a member
of the Festival Dancers and performed
with the Bel Canto Women's Choir as
well as the Temple Players at Temple
Israel. ❑
Seniors Are Honored
The Marketing Office of Jewish
Apartments & Services (JAS)
announced the 2005 honorees for its
annual Eight Over Eighty event.
They are Fran Aaron of Oak Park,
Louis Berlin of Novi, Lillian Gold of
Oak Park, Manny Mittelman of
Southfield, Evelyn Noveck of Novi,
Abe Pasternak of Southfield, Norbert
Reinstein of Oak Park and Jack Schon
of Bloomfield Hills.
Eight Over Eighty honors these
individuals for their lifetime achieve-
ment of volunteering in the communi-
ty.
The honorees all become members
of the Senior Adult Jewish Hall of
Fame.
Eight Over Eighty is a fund-raiser
for one-third of the nearly 900 JAS
residents with incomes below the fed-
eral poverty level — subsidizing their
incomes, allowing them to buy food.
The 2005 event will be held Sunday,
May 15, at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield. The
brunch will be from 11 a.m. to noon
at a cost of $65; the induction cere-
mony will follow. There is no charge
for the ceremony, though donations
are accepted.
