In And On Court
ast week
was quite a
week in var-
ious courts.
If you were
Robert Blake, you're
packing your bags
and loading up the
motor home for a
HARRY
little bit of "cow-
KIRSBAUM boying," thanks to
your attorney.
Columnist
If you're Scott
Peterson, you were
in a cold, dank cell,
waiting for your next visit from your
attorney, who's preparing the first of
endless appeals to keep that needle
out of your arm.
Listening to the jurors in both cases
is a story in itself
In Peterson's case, Scott came off as
a cold-blooded killer who thought he
was so smart that, rather than file for
divorce, he could get away-with the
murder of his wife and unborn child.
In Blake's case, the jurors said not
enough evidence was found to link
the former television star with the
murder of his wife. They said he
wasn't innocent of killing his wife —
he just wasn't guilty.
As with all other high-profile cases
that show up on Court TV, it pays to
be rich. Michael Jackson should be
feeling confident.
There was a strong show of force
last week in an Atlanta courtroom
when Brian Nichols re-appeared
after overpowering, then allegedly
killing a guard, a judge, a court
reporter and a federal officer four
days earlier in an escape that drew
national attention.
This time, 19 deputies escorted
Nichols, a 33-year-old former college
football player, to court in shackles.
I wonder if four people would still
be alive if someone would have not
removed handcuffs on Nichols the
first time. He might not have had the
chance to allegedly overpower and
murder that 51-year-old female guard
who was all of 100 pounds.
Nichols faces the needle, too, which
is a bit different than what Iranian
Mohammed Bijeh went through on
his way to the afterlife on March 16.
Harry Kirsbaum's e-mail address is
hkirsbaum@thejewishnews.com.
Bijeh, 23, confessed to raping then
burning to death 16 boys between
March and September 2004 in the
small town of Pakdasht.
He was sentenced to 100 lashes and
a good ol' hangin' in the town where
he committed the crimes. A crowd of
5,000 gathered to watch the punish-
ment. As he was being whipped, the
townspeople pelted him with rocks.
According to an Associated Press
story, 'After the flogging, a rope was
put around Bijeh's neck and attached
to a hook on a crane. The crane's arm
jerked upward and Bijeh's body
dangled, drawing applause from
the crowd."
Now that's an execution.

On The Court
If you know basketball and paid your
way into an NCAA office pool last
week, you should pretty much be out
of the running by now
You're wondering how Kansas could
have been beaten by Bucknell or how
West Virginia could have beaten
Wake Forest.
Well, if you would have picked your
brackets according to which school is
in a more attractive location — the
way our JNpool leader did — you
wouldn't be watching the tournament
for the pure enjoyment of it.
Personal Note
I received a lot of junk mail recently
regarding my 50th birthday.
My shredder is busy enough with
credit card applications, magazine
subscriptions and sweepstakes entries.
It doesn't need the extra workload.
To AARP: I know you feel it's time
I started thinking about getting old,
but I'm not quite ready to buy a
walker and shuffle over to the
Depends shelf in the pharmacy, so
leave me alone.
To the employees at the Angel of
Peace Mausoleum at the Guardian
Angel Cemetery in Rochester: I just
went to the doctor last week for a
check-up. He said I have the body of
a 48-year-old, so I'm two years ahead
of the game.
I appreciate your concern, but at
my age I'm not planning on ground
burials, cremation, niches or crypts.
I'm not planning on converting to
Catholicism either, so take me off
your list.
You've been so warned. ❑
