Akiva students participating in the goodwill drive for needy Israeli families.

Ethiopian Jewish widow and her boys
and girls. Mrs. Bentzi works as a clean-
ing lady to earn money to support her
eight children, Tsaidi says.
Both families receive support from
the state, "but that only pays so much,"
Tsaidi said.
The Akiva kindergarten class has
adopted the Bentzi family. Grades 1-2
collected items to be sent to the Biton
family. In all, 10 boxes of goods were
gathered. Included in the packages are
clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, kitchen
and personal care items and toys.
Students David Fogel and Noah
Adler made giving to the Israelis the
theme of their birthday parties.
"The families said, Don't bring gifts
for our child; instead, bring them for
the Israelis,"' Tsaidi said.
Akiva 10th-graders participating in

the Lehava Experience will take the
packages to Israel later this month. The
Lehava participants will also take money
collected throughout the year for Akiva's
adopted schools in Israel. The schools
use the funds to buy school supplies for
students; many schools don't have
enough basic classroom materials.
Lehava is a 2-week educational tour
of Israel, where Akiva 10th-graders
and their educational director, Rabbi
Yigal Tsaidi, experience the culture,
geography, politics, people and beauty
of Israel.
Shulamit Tsaidi is so pleased with
the generosity of the donors that she
plans to reach out to new needy Israeli
families each month. The Kol Yisrael
Achim committee also includes Akiva
mothers Miriam Gunz Schwarz and
Kim Ben-Ezra. ❑
