Amy's Army is a group of people rallying around 12- year-old Amy Katz. The Pittsburgh youngster has chronic myelogenous leukemia — rare in kids her age. Amy is responding to a new form of oral chemotherapy, Gleevec, which she takes as part of a study. The drug is so new it is hard to anticipate long-term results. But the drug is not a cure, says Amy's mom, Lisa. "A bone marrow transplant, therefore, is Amy's best chance for recovery." Over the past 18 months, Amy's Army bone marrow drives have brought in 5,000 new Amy Katz potential donors. Two patients found a match and went to trans- at any time. plant.
