Sue Luria, president of Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah, offers a presenta-
tion on stem cell research.

wide.
Luria spoke about stem cell
research, why it is so important, and
why adult stem cells and the current
federally approved embryonic stem
cell lines are not sufficient to
advance medical research. State Sen.
Gilda Jacobs, D-Huntington Woods,
facilitated the presentation and
reception in the Capitol building.
Sate Rep. Andy Meisner, D-
Ferndale, spoke about stem cell
research in Michigan and the need
for new legislation. He said the
majority of Michigan voters, includ-
ing Roman Catholics and anti-
choice proponents, support embry-
onic stem cell research and thus
Michigan law is out of step with the
people.
Meisner emphasized economic
consequences when he described
how the state ban on this research
could block the flow of jobs in the
life sciences to Michigan. He has
proposed a bill almost identical to
the federal bipartisan bill, co-spon-
sored by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-
Utah, to override President Bush's
restrictions on this research.
His bill would strengthen criminal
penalties for participating in human
reproductive cloning, a pursuit that
is almost universally opposed. It
would permit stem cell research
using — with written consent of the
donors — frozen embryos left over
from fertility treatments and slated
for destruction, and also allow
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
(SCNT), the process of growing
healthy organ tissue for treatment or
transplant.
Hadassah members promised to
intensify their efforts. To participate,
or to request the PowerPoint presen-
tation "The Promise of Stem Cells,"

Upcoming Events:

Come try us on Thursday, March 24 at 7:00 pm. Join the congregation for a sing-a-long and hear new lyrics to

`oldies' favorites when the Megillah is translated in song by the TKA Choir and featured soloists. Great fun for

both kids and adults. Come in costume! Bring a box of 'noisy' food to shake (macaroni, rice, etc.), then put it

d

in the Soya box at the end of the evening. Have fun and enjoy some Hamentashen!
