JAYKELEN NELKIN

Jaykelen Nelkin
with one of her
many trophies.

City: West Bloomfield
Kudos: Drag-racing
Champ

Jaykelen Nelkin, 12, has more than four
years of driving under her belt and she's not
even old enough for a license. Since age 8,
she's been racing junior dragsters at
Michigan tracks in Milan and Stanton as
well as elsewhere across the country She's
got at least 70 trophies decorating her liv-
ing room in West Bloomfield and several
championship jackets with her name
stitched over the heart. She loves the speed
and the thrill of racing.

I

Do you like driving so young?
"Not a lot of people at 8 can drive. It
is pretty cool.

When and why did you start racing
dragsters?
"I started when I was 8 years old. I
did it because my dad raced Mustangs
and I thought it would be cool and fun.
It is."

Is it scary going so fast?
"I like going fast. It's not scary; it's
fun. I'm not really worried about getting
hurt. I'm wearing a helmet, gloves, a fire
suit, a 5-point seat belt — I can hardly
move. One time my steering wheel
came off and I almost crashed, but I
didn't."

What kind of car do you race?
"I race junior dragsters — that's a
dragster that's half the size."

Is it unusual for girls to race dragsters?
'About 40 percent of racers are girls."

How many cars do you have?
"We have four cars. Two are my dad's.
My dragsters are in a trailer."

How often do you race?
"I'm at the race track Friday through
Sunday during the summer."

How did you learn to drive?
"I went to the track one day and a
whole bunch of people told me how,
and I just did it. Then my dad helped
me, too.

What tides do you hold and what do
you get when you win, besides tro-
phies?
"I've won four championships. At
Milan, I'm the 10- to 12-year-old cham-
pion. At Mid-Michigan Motorplex in

Stanton, I'm the track champion of the
junior dragsters. I've been the
International Hot Rod Association 10-
to 12-year-old national champion two
years in a row. And the Michigan
Bracket Final Champion, 10th anniver-
sary National Hot Rod Association
Division III champion. And I won the
Halloween national event at Gateway
International Raceway Park in St. Louis.
Every time you win, you win money,
too — and bicycles, radios, cases of pop.
Last year, I won a trip to Disneyworld.

What has racing done for you?
"I'm pretty confident. It's also helped
me concentrate on things more.

Candlelighting

One year later, my client has lost
46 pounds and counting. She has
succeeded in making a lifestyle
change that I'm confident will
allow her to control her weight in
the future. Sometimes, all we just
need is a little help and to believe
that we can do it.

Immediately, I tried to put her
at ease, let her know
she had a partner in the
process, and that this was
definitely "doable." As I
normally do, I explained
to her that I believed in
taking a whole-person,
integrated approach to
her well-being. After
thoroughly analyzing
/ her circumstances, I de-
vised a nutritional life-
style plan that addressed
her particular situation.

Candlelighting

This past year I've been counsel-
ing a client, who, prior to com-
ing to me had overcome lupus,
diabetes, serious joint debilitation
and kidney failure resulting in a
kidney transplant, but had been
unable to control her weight. At
our first session I could tell that
her confidence was low due to
past weight-management failures,
and that she was skeptical of my
(or anyone else's) ability to help
her achieve her weight loss goals.
