It's Kosher-Only

A

n announcement in a
newsletter sent out by the
Matt Prentice Restaurant
Group to offer non-kosher food serv-
ice at events held on Shabbat at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield
turned out to be
the result of a
misunderstand-
ing and will not
rake place.
According to
Prentice, the let-
ter was based on
a miscommuni-
cation with the
Vaad Harabonim
Rabbi Spolter
— Council of
Orthodox
Rabbis of
Greater Detroit
in Southfield.
"He was under
the impression
that the Vaad
had agreed to
allow him to
offer non-kosher
food on
Shabbos," said
Vaad member
Rabbi Morris
Rabbi Reuven
Spolter of Young
Israel of Oak Park.
After it was made clear that the
Vaad did not give that permission,
Prentice said he will not offer the non-
kosher option.
"I would do nothing without the
approval of the Vaad or of the JCC, "
said Prentice, who is the on-site kosher
caterer at the JCC in West Bloomfield
and owner of the JCC-based Milk &
Honey kosher restaurant, both super-
vised by the Vaad.
Following a March 9 meeting
between Prentice and members of the
Vaad — including Rabbi Spolter and
Rabbi Yechiel Morris of Young Israel
of Southfield — the two rabbis pre-

sented a jointly written statement to
their congregants.
"Matt did not maliciously go
around the Vaad, but through a mis-
understanding was left with the
impression that he had permission to
offer the non-kosher catering," the
statement said. "The Vaad made it
clear to him that permission was never
granted and apologized to him for the
misunderstanding."
The ongoing relationship between
the caterer and the rabbinic organiza-
tion did not falter as a result of the
issue.
"Matt Prentice, since entering the
food business, has been exemplary in
his commitment to the highest stan-
dards of kosher dietary laws," the
statement continued. "The Vaad has
had an excellent relationship with
him and he has gained the trust and
praise of the Vaad. It is the Vaad's
understanding that this latest inci-
dent was a true misunderstanding,
and it will in no way affect the
strong relationship between the Vaad
and Matt Prentice. The Vaad contin-
ues to encourage the community to
strongly support Milk & Honey
restaurant and Matt Prentice kosher
catering."
Milk & Honey and Matt Prentice
kosher catering (with food prepared at
Milk & Honey) and the Norma Jean
and Edward Meer Jewish Apartments
in West Bloomfield — whose food
service is provided by Prentice — con-
tinue to be under the supervision of
the Vaad.
A statement issued by the JCC
said, "While there has been some dis-
cussion among the Jewish
Community Center's executive com-
mittee regarding the provision of a
non-kosher food option for catered
events at the JCC's West Bloomfield
location, there are currently no plans
to serve non-kosher food for any
JCC catered functions. Any informa-
tion that has been disseminated in
the community regarding this matter
has been done so based on a miscom-
munication."
