side, sister Elvira Saragossa making the
pasta, nephew Felipe Saragossa baking
the bread and delicious garlic rolls, and
nephew Aldo Saragossa his bartender ...
Also, since the beginning 20 years ago,
are Mona Carrier, a server 10 years and
now Dom's bookkeeper, and Maria
D'Aristode, his hostess-manager.
It's true that the more experience a
restaurateur garners, his operation usu-
ally improves that much.
In the case of Dominic Picano, it is
even further ... As an Italian restaura-
teur who came to America in 1949, his
roots in Italy show with the continua-
tion of using fresh ingredients as is the
true basis for authentic Italian cooking
... That Dominic has not wavered in
this homeland food preparation prem-
ise says much about the man and his
restaurant.
FINALLY ... A BOOK coming out
this fall that will be strictly on deli-
catessens in America ... nothing else ...
It'll be called America's Great Delis:
Recipes and Traditions from Coast To
Coast (Collectors Press Inc).
It's being written by former Detroiter
Sheryll Bellman Rott, now living in La
Jolla, Calif, with husband, Joel N. and
their three children.
This is her second book, the first one
in 2000 was Through the Shopping
Glass: A Century of New York Christmas
Windows... Both works use her maiden
name of Sheryll Bellman.
Among many others, America's Great
Delis will feature Detroit's old Darbys
and Boesky's ... hopefully, those head-
ing the JCC Jewish Book Fair in
November will have Sheryll and her
book among its always fine presenta-
tions.
REMEMBER TO TUNE in every
Monday evening over NBC-TV ... to
see The Contender with former localite
Jackie Kallen, Sylvester Stallone and
Sugar Ray Leonard.
Jackie is in the opening credits each
week and shown from time to time
during the show; some episodes fea-
ture her more than others ... She plays
the role of a "den mother" for the 16
contestants vying for big time honors
and money ... Jackie sees to it they eat
properly, train diligently and have her
shoulder to lean on when they are
tired, homesick or have problems.
THERE'LL BE 18 winners at the
three-night Purim costume contest by
Yossi's Israeli Cuisine in West
Bloomfield ... Thursday-Saturday,
March 24-26 ... for both youngsters
and grown-ups.
First place prize for up to 12-year-
olds each day is kid's dinner for four;
second place is kid's dinner for two;
third place is one free kid's dinner ...
First place for adults in costume is a
$30 gift certificate; second place a $20
certificate; third place a $10 certificate.
No restrictions on costumes, any-
thing from Purim to Batman ... But
employees at Yossi's will all be in Purim
theme.
SO SORRY DEPT ... To the David
Brody who writes, "A comment in your
column brought laughs to relatives and
friends, David Brody happy-go-lucky
as usual.' There must be two persons
named David Brody, because I don't fit
the definition for happy-go-lucky."
He's right about there being two with
the same name, but each spell theirs
differently ... The happy-go-lucky gent
spells it BRODIE.
EVERY WEDNESDAY through
March features the Sean Blackman
Quintet with its Brazilian jazz, 6-10, at
the new Pampas Brazilian Grille in
Birmingham.
LOCATION OF THE 48-seater
Spanga's Coney Island restaurant that is
open all night, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, for event-goers, is on
Woodward just south of 14 Mile in
Royal Oak ... It's one of the few places
around that have kosher all-beef hot
dogs for coneys ... and if requested, are
also made with turkey hamburger ...
The homemade baklava and spinach
pie are excellent, too.
HEART SPECIALIST Nathan
Kerner, M.D., was just a youngster
when Darbys burned down in 1967,
but tells of his dad, Darbys general
manager Bernard Kerner, being asked
about re-opening again in the then up-
and-coming West Bloomfield area ...
"Our Jewish customers will never move
out that far, and it would be too diffi-
cult to get help," said Bernie.
