What makes Born into Brothels such
an effective piece of filmmaking is
how skillfully Kauffman, an HBO
veteran, and Briski negotiate the ten-
sion running through the entire film
of finding a way to empower the
innocent energy of childhood while
staving off the encroaching darkness.
Kochi says it best, "If I could go
someplace and get an education, I
wonder what I could become. I
worry that I might become like them
(her mother and grandmother)."
Born Into Brothels is not flawless.
There are a few stretches where the
film meanders, particularly on a
group trip to the beach, where it
threatens to become an MTV rock
video. The music by John
McDowell, while quite pleasant on
its own, is a bit too sugary in the
film's context.
Given the film's short running

time (83 minutes), one yearns for a
more detailed picture of the milieu
and social structure of Sonagachi
but, to their credit, Briski and
Kauffman (the two were romantical-
ly involved for a while after Briski
moved to New York City to study
photography in the mid-'90s) sel-
dom take their eyes off the kids and
Briski's efforts on their behalves.
Most important, those efforts are
bearing fruit. Sales of the photo-
graphs and a book deal have already
brought in over $100,000 for Kids
With Cameras, the foundation that
Briski established to help the chil-
dren of sex workers. She has hopes
of opening a school for Sonagachi's
kids in 2006; backstage at the
Oscars, she said a school is now
being built.
Indeed, when that envelope was
opened at the Academy Awards less
than two weeks ago, there was a lot
more at stake for these children than
being able to tell their agents to ask
for a larger trailer on their next film.
One can only hope that this Oscar
will help Kochi and her friends real-
ize some of their dreams. ❑

Amsterdam, we follow Briski's dual
struggles: to get the boy a passport
despite the massively uninterested
Indian government bureaucracy and
to keep him from dropping out of
the workshop and back into the vor-
tex of the district.
When his mother is murdered by
her pimp, Avijit seems a lost cause.
He tells the filmmakers, "There is
nothing called 'hope' in my future."
"The whole point of this is to get
the kids out of the brothels," Briski
says. "My fear is that I can't do any-
thing."
