To that end, Fisher wrote about and pub-
lished photographs of AIDS caregivers in a
book called Angels in our Midst (Moyer Bell,
1997). Excerpts are online at
www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9712/hero-
cover.htm.
Early in 1999, Fisher announced that she
had stopped taking her anti-HIV drugs
because the side effects left her sick or in
bed, and she wanted to live a more full life
with her two sons. She remains a devoted
AIDS activist, author and artist. IVF

In 1992, at the Republican National

she boldly discussed her personal struggle

Mary Fisher

tim but a messenger, she urged her party to
"set aside prejudice and politics to make
room for compassion and sound policy."
She also spoke compassionately about
her family in Detroit.
"My family has been a rock of support,"
she told the nation. "My 84-year-old father,
who has pursued the healing of the nations,
will not accept the premise that he cannot
heal his daughter. My mother has refused to
be broken; she still calls at midnight to tell
wonderful jokes that make me laugh. Sisters
and friends and my brother Phillip all have
helped carry me over the hardest places. I
am blessed, richly and deeply blessed, to
have such a family.
"But not all of you have been so blessed.
You are HIV-positive but dare not say it. You
have lost loved ones, but you dared not
whisper the word AIDS. You weep silently;
you grieve alone.
"I have a message for you: It is not you
who should feel shame, it is we. We who
tolerate ignorance and practice prejudice,
we who have taught you to fear. We must
lift our shroud of silence, making it safe for
you to reach out for compassion. It is our
task to seek safety for our children, not in
quiet denial but in effective action."

`Max Fisher was living
proof that the American
Dream was the continent's
reality From humble
beginnings, he created an
empire. And as soon as he
built his wealth, he began
to share it. He lived by the
dictum that wealth created
should be wealth given
away.
'Max Fisher was the best
sort of leader. He was a
leader that nurtured lead-
ers. If the Jewish people
and Israel are enjoying the
commitment of an excellent
group of lay leaders, it is
thanks to the example of a
life of commitment that has
been the life of Max
Fisher."
