FOR THE AGES BUYING Max M. Fisher, 1908-2005 A Personal Impact "It was 1962 when zve first met. He agreed to sponsor me at the golf club. I clearly remember our brief discussion, as I was so nervous and in awe of this promi- nent man. During JOEL D. TAUBER the year that fol- lowed, I admired Max Fisher from afar as he soared to even greater heights in business, politics and philanthropy. As my own career developed, I used Max as a model to emulate, but realized early on that I could never come close to his amazing accomplishments. "Nonetheless, as my political and Jewish communal life gained momentum, my contact with him became more frequent and intense, culminating in later years to elegant, private monthly Saturday lunches at the Fishers. One of his greatest attributes was this easy and friendly access. "His encouragement and advice at each stage of my development was instrumental to my advancement. Ideas like Patience and perseverance,' 'build a consensus,' when you lead, look behind you to see if anyone is fie- lowing' were conveyed to me _frequently. "What I appreciated most was when I really needed help on a local, national or international initiative, he was there for me with his support, suggestions, encour- agement, warmth and most of all, active 0 0 Li arrella 41 1) c oly FINE JEWELS E 248.549.9100 32889 woo dward avenue royal oak west side of woodward — one block south of 14 mile hours: Tu 10 6 W 10 6 Th 10 8 Fr 10 6 Sat 11 5 - - Akiva - - - The Yeshivat Akiva Family joins the Detroit Jewish Community in mourning the loss of our long-time supporter MAX FISHER his vision and leadership have left an everlasting mark on our community. He opened the doors and helped us walk through. He encouraged us and kept in touch. I don't know why I was so lucky, but he opened the door to politics in Michigan for me. He gave me advice, treated me with respect and encouraged me to always do the right thing. There is so much more I could say, but mostly I just adored him for his kindness and for his encouragement." w • . • B'NAI 11111TH GREAT LAKES REGION — Andrea Fischer Newman, senior vice president-government affairs, Northwest Airlines, and a member of the University of Michigan board of regents Express their heartfelt condolences to the family of 3/10 2005 34 Joel D. Tauber is a Southfield-based investor, philanthropist and Jewish communal leader who was on the original executive committee of UJC. Mark Nadel Marc Jerusalem , participation. He was a problem solver, never a problem creator: However; if he felt I was wrong, he would say so; when he felt I was right, he stood with me against all odds and intense pressure. "The best example of our relationship was demonstrated during the original United Jewish Communities merger explo- ration. Although originally opposed to the merger of the Council of Jewish Federations, United Israel Appeal and United Jewish Appeal, he became con- vinced of its value through the study process and our extensive personal discus- sions. After an exhaustive two-year, heated debate and discussion, the 35-membe• blue ribbon committee recommended the merger to the Jewish communities of North America. At the meeting to vote on the proposal, the naysayers and those fear fill of change attacked the merger plan. Not one person from the committee stood up to this bar- rage except me, as chairman, and Max. The proposal was defeated, but its validity was confirmed as the merger took place three years later. "It is clear to me that Max M. Fisher played an essential role, in not only my philanthropic life, but also, and more importantly, my entire life. His caring, friendship and philosophy will live with me forever: I will miss him." MAX M. FISHER 947210
