Women's Seder

He Lived Tzedakah

"In the world of
Jewish volunteer lead-
ers, Max Fisher was a
giant. He was known
to all — whether
heads of state in Israel
or the United States,
or the leadership of the
Jewish and general
HOWARD
communities in the
RIEGER
United States — as a
prime mover, ac someone who made things
happen. Max Fisher cared about the Jewish
people and their well being. He loved the
Jewish homeland. He led the way in build-
ing bridges that linked the Jews of the dias-
pora with their brothers and sisters in
Israel.
"For decades, he also served as a trusted
adviser to US. presidents and Israeli prime
ministers, rallyingfir causes from the Six-
Day War to the welfare of Ethiopian Jewry.
By quietly forging new ties between
Washington and Jerusalem, Fisher pio-
neered a new era irz American Jewish
activism and was considered the elder
statesman ofRepublican Jews.
"Fisher served as national chairman of
the United Jewish Appealfi-om 1965-
1967, president of the Council of Jewish
Federations from 1969-1972 and chair-
man of the United Israel Appeal (UIA)
from 1968-1971. All three organizations
merged in 1999 to form UJC. He served as
president of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit from 1959-1964.
"Besides serving as honorary chair of
UJC, he was founding chairman of the
board of governors of UJCs overseas part-
ner, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). He
was active in the American Jewish
Committee, .ffnai B'rith International and
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Socie t y.
"In recognition of his lifelong devotion,
commitment and generosity to Jews every-
where, UJC and the Jewish Federations of
North America named their New York
headquarters in September 2002 as the
Max. M Fisher Headquarters of United
Jewish Communities.
`May it stand as a memorial to him
and his lifelong interest in the UJC and
the Jewish Federations of North America.
A plaque at the headquarters honoring
Fisher cites his words: 'We are all trustees
of our Jewish heritage . . . with an obli-
gation to cherish it, improve it and guard
its filture.'"
