GREAT for a car.

The True Measure

like the measure of a man
like Max M. Fisher? His
wealth was tangible; he
weighed in at 383 on the Forbes 400 list
of America's wealthiest with a fortune
estimated at $775 million. His influ-
ence was prodigious; he had the ability
to dial Washington and Jerusalem and
speak directly to the U.S. president and
Israeli prime minister. His love for
Detroit — as well as for secular and
Jewish causes in which he believed —
was monumental; his philanthropy
topped $100 million.
But Max Fisher was something more.
He embodied all that is good about
people. He was brutally honest as well
as being decisive, witty and generous
and an original, forward-looking
thinker. That he was Jewish was a
bonus to Jews the world over.
To gain his true measure, the JN"For
The Ages" is a sweeping portrait of a
giant among men who worked best on
the edges of the spotlight, but who
found himself often caught up in the
vortex of political, communal or busi-
ness forces.
I oversaw this weeklong effort with
the assistance of Story Development
Editor Keri Guten Cohen, Associate
Editor Alan Hitsky, Arts Editor Gail
Zimmerman and staff writers Harry
Kirsbaum and Shelli Liebman
Dorfman.
Senior Copy Editor David Sachs and
Art Director Michelle Reska led the
production and creative sides with sup-
port from the entire Editorial and
Creative staffs.
The JNthanks Fisher biographer
Peter M. Golden, the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
funeral director David Techner of Ira
Kaufman Chapel in Southfield and the
Fisher family for providing content or
other support.
We invite letters about the Fisher
legacy, but please keep them to 150
words maximum.
Let there be no doubt: The world is a
better place because Max Fisher walked
among us.

B'Shalom,

deeply mourn the passing of

Max M. Fisher,'7 117

An incomparable giant in the Jewish, Israel, civic

and business worlds, Max received the first honorary degree

ever granted by Bar-Ilan University.

The Jewish world has rarely had such leadership,

and his wisdom and compassion will be missed eternally.

May his wonderful family be comforted by their love for him.
