was an avid tennis player even into his 84th year. Dr. Gilles was an optometrist for 49 years, mainly in the Detroit area. Soon after receiving his optometry degree, he proposed to his future wife, and brought her to Michigan, where they married and lived for the next 49 years. Dr. Gilles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian; children, Susan Gilles of Beverly Hills, Herbert Gilles of Dallas, Texas, and Andrea and Walter Briggs of Beverly Hills; grandchildren, Walter Briggs, Jacqueline Gilles, Aaron Briggs and William Briggs. She attended Mumford High School and Wayne State University before completing a master's degree in library sciences at Hebrew University.
