After graduating from Wayne State University, he proudly served his country as a lieu- tenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a skip- per of an LCT watercraft during the D-Day inva- sion of Normandy, France. After the war, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, receiving a doctor of optometry in 1952. While attending optometry school, he earned some of his tuition costs by working as an Arthur Murray dance instructor. He
