known to me as Mertz's. Few nights
passed that I did not inhale the vapors
of seven-layer cakes, bobkes and those
dry cakes that you could chew up and
spit out in clouds at other kids, called
kichel. Mrs. Mertz always gave cakes
and cookies to us kids.

in Delray Beach, Fla., and saw pictures
of Detroit. Being nosy, I inquired
. about the connection and found out
that my former Mumford High class-
mate Sybil Marx owned the Star
Bakery and that her family had owned
a bakery in Detroit.
"She told me that her mother-in-law
was Mrs. Mertz. So when your readers
are on Atlantic Avenue at Military Trail
in Delray Beach and want a taste of
Detroit, they can stop by and see Sybil
and chew on a Detroit-style roll." .
