announcer at WTAM, the network's
Cleveland station.
Westinghouse bought the station in
1956 and moved it into the Top 40 for-
mat with disc jockeys. "I was then one
of eight staff announcers, and we were
all asked to try out for the new format,"
recalls Liebman. "We sat around and
agreed we wouldn't demean ourselves,
that it was an insult to our integrity and
profession. I told my wife when I got
home and she looked at me and asked,
`What do you have to lose?'
"I was the only one of the eight who
submitted a tape. Because the station
wanted to hire someone who applied, I
got the nod. Later, I heard that when
they played my audition tape, they all
laughed at it."
Westinghouse not only redubbed
Liebman as Specs Howard (Specs came
from his glasses, Howard was found at
random in a phone book), but also
renamed the station KYW. Liebman
was given the "housewives' slot" —
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — which he
held until 1962.
In the aftermath of the payola scan-
dal, when record companies paid DJs to
play their recordings, the station decid-
ed to make some changes.
Westinghouse had successfully put
together the morning team of Klaven
and Fitch at WNEW in New York and
wanted to try it in Cleveland with
Liebman as the straight man.
After a nationwide search, they found
Harry Martin in San Diego. The team
of Martin and Howard clicked and were
No. 1 in Cleveland for five years.

"Specs Howard" in the studio

\XTXYZ brought the team to Detroit
in 1967, but the magic wasn't there.
After two years, they pulled the plug
and Liebman found himself back in
Cleveland at WKYC. His family stayed
in Detroit and Liebman commuted on
weekends.
He missed his family and, after
resigning for "personal and family rea-
sons," came back in 1969 to a job at
WCAR.
After Liebman opened his school, he
would be on the air from 6 to 9 every
morning and at the school until 9 p.m.
He continued the grueling schedule for
almost a year, until he was taken to the
hospital with chest pains. It turned out
to be exhaustion. But except for a free-
lance stint at WX'YT, that wrote an end
to his on-air radio career.
"I still loved the business," says
Liebman. "I had been on the air from
1948 to 1970. Twenty-two years was a
good run."
Recognizing Liebman's long career as
a radio broadcaster and educator, the
Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts
presented its founder with a Lifetime
Achievement Award at ceremonies
marking the school's 35th anniversary
in January.
The event, held at the Henry Ford
Museum in Dearborn, saw 35 out-
standing graduates — one for each
year of the school's history — named
to the their Hall of Fame, along with
the re-induction of three graduates
first honored in 1977.
