Dear
Barb n a
faithful reader.
Please advise
me what to do
about my acid
reflux problem. Thanks, T. W.

"

A

nswer: Dear T. W.,
Gastroesophageal reflux
disease (GERD) occurs
when the muscle at the top of
your stomach opens inappro-
priately, allowing acid from the
stomach into the esophagus.

GERD (acid reflux) can cause
difficulty swallowing, hoarse-
ness, coughing, deterioration of
teeth enamel and other symptoms
requiring medical attention.

4- Your food and lifestyle

choices can have a funda-
mental impact on GERD:
• Avoid stress;
• Avoid foods that
>fx relax the muscles: e.g.,
alcohol, caffeine, milk
chocolate, peppermint,
and onions;
\ , // • Avoid: overeating,
\ 1 / eating too quickly and
r foods that are too pro-
cessed, fatty, acidic, sug-
ary, or deep fried;
• Try this hearty alkaline broth
for dinner: cook a thick soup
with a lot of carrots, celery,
potatoes, green vegetables,
parsnips, rutabaga, turnips,
parsley, dill, basil; all in a
vegetable broth that is seasoned
lightly. Have some Aloe Vera
or Prickly Pear juice, diluted
with tepid water, or a very
small banana for dessert.
