Arena and the Javits Center in the
New York area; and the Walt Disney
Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the
Rosemont Theatre in Chicago, the
Ricoh Centre in Toronto, the
Shriner's Hall in Southfield and
dozens of other venues across the con-
tinent, reflected a deep and joyful
commitment to the fullness of our
religious heritage, to what some of the
darkest forces in the world have tried,
and failed, to eradicate.
On March 2, Daf Yomi students
returned to the first page of the
Talmud. Other Jews continued their
Torah studies too.
For some, it was the Bible and its
commentaries; for others, works on
Jewish law, whether about kashrut,
proper speech, the Sabbath or any
other realm of Torah. All were
inspired anew to drink in and be nur-
tured by the mother's milk of the
Jewish people.
Each and every one of us Jews can
be — should be — part of that essen-
tial effort and priceless privilege. El

Mom and dad

Since mom and dad moved to
Heritage of Southfield retirement
community they just don't seem
like themselves. They're laughing
more, they're always busy and the
twinkle in dad's eyes are back.

These are the future leaders of our
Jewish communities and I'm proud to
have known them. It was a privilege and
an honor to have shared my year with
these people.
My life is better; my background is
richer because of Otzma. The program
exposed me to paramount Jewish princi-
pals of tzedakah (righteous acts) and
tikkun olam (repair of the world). I'm a
stronger person for the experience, and I
have forged a connection to Israel that is
unbreakable. Project Otzma allowed me
to set the standards for my life higher.
I highly encourage others to step
away from the ordinary, to break away
from the expected and consider
Otzma for themselves. You'll be glad
you did. El

Otzma is a 10-month volunteer
program, designed for young
adults ages 20-26. It combines
social action, civil rights and corn-
munity building with people who
share Jewish values and commit-
ment. The deadline for the next
session is March 15. Log on to
www. Otzma.org or call Karen
Kaplan at the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit, (248)
