FIGHTING GOOD FIGHT from page 17

is proud to honor

Dick Lobenthal at U-M Hillel.

Lobenthal replied, "Sickness, really. I
was lied to when I was a kid. I
believed in democracy, all that stuff."
Another audience member asked
him to comment on the frustrations of
people who, discouraged by the Bush
victory in November, were considering
moving to Canada.
"My inclination is to help them
pack," Lobenthal joked. But then he
said that it was "unreasonable" for
people to leave just because Bush won.
If Bush starts doing "terrible things,"
that's another story, he said.
People in the audience of about 25
said they were awed by what Lobenthal
had been through in his life.
"He fascinates me. He's done literally
everything and lived to tell about it,"
says Ben Sharp, a retiree who lives in
Ypsilanti and .who takes classes at
"He's a man who put himself in
danger because he believed that some-
thing was right," says U-M sophomore
Monica Woll. "I learned that if you're
very passionate about a cause, you
need to be dedicated."
Hillel's Rabbi Jason Miller said that
he'd known Lobenthal years ago when
he interned in the Michigan ADL office.
"When they created Dick Lobenthal,
they broke the mold," he said. ❑
